Photo rules for United States passport (2 × 2 in)

Printed photos are 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), with the head measuring 1–1⅜ in (25–35 mm) from chin to the top of the head. Online renewal takes a digital photo between 54 KB and 10 MB; the tool makes a 1200 × 1200 px JPG within that range.

We have not been able to confirm every number on the official page. Please check it before you submit.

How it works

  1. Choose your document, then drop a front-facing photo taken against a plain wall.
  2. The tool finds your face, sizes it to the official rules and cleans the background. Adjust the box if needed.
  3. Press Create photos to get a digital photo for online forms and print sheets for 4×6 in or A4 paper.

About this tool

Each country sets its own photo size, head size and background colour. The tool uses the official rules for your document and places your head inside the allowed range automatically.

Face detection and background cleaning run entirely on your device using Google’s MediaPipe. The models download once (about 16 MB) the first time you use the tool, then your browser keeps them. Always check the official rules linked below before you submit.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent anywhere, and the tool keeps working even if you go offline after the page has loaded.

How do I print the photos?

Print the 4×6 in sheet at any photo kiosk or online print service at “actual size”, then cut along the light grey lines.

Can I wear glasses?

Most countries, including the US and UK, ask you not to wear glasses in passport photos. Check your country’s rules.

Will my photo be accepted?

The size and framing follow the official rules, but approval also depends on lighting, expression and image quality, which only you can control. Use even light, a neutral expression and look straight at the camera.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
