How to choose between them

Almost every disagreement about the "best" subscription tracker comes down to three decisions. Settle these and the shortlist picks itself.

1. Will you connect your bank?

Connecting accounts is the only way an app can discover subscriptions you have forgotten, and it is the single biggest privacy trade on offer. Rocket Money, PocketGuard, and Copilot Money require it. Subkept, Bobby, Chronicle, and SubBuddy never ask for it, at the cost of adding subscriptions yourself. Neither answer is wrong, but it is the decision that eliminates half the market.

2. Subscription, one-time, or free?

Paying a monthly fee to watch monthly fees bothers some people more than others. Bobby and Chronicle are one-time purchases of a few dollars. Subkept and Wallet by BudgetBakers have free tiers with caps. Copilot Money is premium-only at around $14/mo. Work out your lifetime cost, not the sticker price.

3. Do you need to leave Apple?

The best one-time-purchase trackers are Apple-only, so an iPhone user has more good options than an Android user does. If you might switch phones, or want the same view on a desktop browser, that rules out Bobby, Chronicle, and Copilot Money before features enter the conversation.

One thing worth knowing whichever you pick: automatic detection is not as complete as it sounds. It reads transactions, so it routinely misses annual renewals, anything billed through the App Store or Google Play, and subscriptions a family member pays for. A tracker that finds most of your subscriptions still leaves the expensive, easily forgotten ones invisible.
